4 of our favourite cocktails to celebrate Day of the Dead

Feliz Día de los Muertos! On 2nd November it will be Day of the Dead, the Mexican holiday where family and friends gather to remember those who have died and support them on their spiritual journey to the afterlife. It’s a day of celebration, as Mexicans believe death is simply a continuation of the life cycle.

They dress up in colourful costumes, paint their faces with sugar skulls and wear flower crowns, and there’s a carnival atmosphere across the country.

There’s actually a reason behind the four bright colours of the sugar skulls. Yellow is for the sun and unity, white represents the spirit and purity, red depicts the blood of life, purple is for mourning and pink represents happiness.

We had to create four brand new cocktails with Cazcabel Tequila to celebrate the day. Here are the recipes so you can put on your own Día de los Muertos party:

WIDOW MAKER

40ml Cazcabel Blanco Tequila

10ml Absinthe

5 Blackberries

20ml Lime

15ml Agave

Egg white

Blackberry mint garnish

Muddle the blackberries in a shaker and then add the other ingredients. Shake over ice and then strain out and shake again. Garnish with a blackberry and rosemary stalk.

DIABALITO 

30ml Cazcabel Blanco

10ml Mezcal

20ml Pomegranate juice

10ml Chambord

25ml Lime juice

15ml Agave

1 dash Bitters

Shake all ingredients and strain into a rocks glass with fresh ice. Garnish with blackberry and mint.

BLOODY MARGARITA  

50ml Cazcabel Blanco

25ml Lime juice

15ml Agave syrup

50ml Red wine float

Shake the Cazcabel Reposado Tequila, lime and agave syrup. Strain into rocks glass with fresh Ice, Spoon over the red wine to create a float – serve.

WITCH DOCTOR  

20ml Honey Cazcabel

20ml Peaty whisky

20ml Pineapple juice

25ml Lime juice

15ml Orgeat syrup

2 dash angostura bitters

Shake all ingredients and strain into a chilled Nick and Nora glass.

Garnish with a dried piece of orange and a rosemary stick.
